When we read the last chapter of 1 Chronicles we learned of the death of David and the ascension of Solomon to the throne. Here in 1 Kings we read the grim details surrounding this ascension. The transfer of power was neither smooth nor peaceful. These events are recorded with great drama and tension for most people, apparently even David, expected that the oldest son, Adonijah, would become King. This was common practice in the ancient world. So as Adonijah took steps to seize power, the Lord sent Nathan the prophet to anoint His chosen one Solomon as the new King. Thus the outcome of events, though tense, is never really in doubt.
Our lives are often filled with drama, doubt and tension. We face many obstacles, setbacks, and reversals. Modern life is made more complicated by the diversity and great number of choices that progress has created. In order to negotiate the maze of options, we must make godly choices. This requires that we spend time with the Lord in prayer, study of the word and with godly counselors. Too often we would rather make choices based on the impulse of the flesh or the dictates of our culture. Then we run into trouble and suffer. Yet even in those times we spend on the wrong path, the issue for the true believer is never really in doubt. God will always work out His will in His Kingdom even if we have to suffer in the process. Yet the lesson we should take to heart is to seek His face in the beginning so we can determine where He is leading and then ask for His help to follow and obey.
