Hezekiah instituted major religious reforms throughout Judah. These began with the purification of the Temple so that it could be reopened and worship begun once again. The purification took some time since the temple and its furniture and altars had been defiled by the idolatry promoted by Ahaz for so many years. Then the temple had to be consecrated once again to the Lord. Hezekiah had to encourage the priests to undertake this duty once again since it had been neglected for so long. This was necessary because during that time many Levites and priests had become apathetic, had lost their faith and became unfit for immediate service.
All of us at times in our life become apathetic and defiled by our sins. The sins of others around us in our community defile them, not us, although contact with such worldly people can entice us to sin. Thus we daily need to be cleansed and re-consecrated unto the service of the Lord. In addition, we need be encouragers just like Hezekiah. We need to encourage one another in our journey of discipleship so that we will not become fearful, complacent and cynical in the face of the allures of the world. We need to encourage one another to keep on trusting God no matter what. We need to encourage one another unto works of love and service in the ministry Christ has entrusted to us
